7-Series Reliability...

Hey,

Two of my uncles got 2004 7-series. One of them got a 745Li, which he showed me the whole car and I fell in love with it !! The interior is so technologically advanced, while still being super luxurious and classy. That car really screams luxury/class. Anyways, my other uncle got a 760Li, supposedly he was the first person in NJ with a 760. They both got their cars within a month or two of each other and they both love it, but they are both having problems. One uncle with the 745Li has a problem with his shocks...whenever the car goes over a bad bump, the car keeps bouncing up and down for like another minute. My parents went out with my uncle and aunt one night and my aunt and mom were sitting in the back and they were getting extremely car sick because of that. Now my uncle with the 760Li, as I have been told my other uncle (they work together), the car is a complete lemon. Very soon after he got it, the car's Check Engine Light came on, and now his car has completely died in his garage. Massive transmission failure and some other problems...my uncle said that the car is a "lemon", and I believe there were more problems than just the transmission.
Can I just ask wtf is BMW's problem? Why are so many people having so many problems with their new cars? Lots of people I know have BMW's and it seems like all of them are having all these stupid problems with them....I mean, I don't care really and I don't think it would keep me from getting a BMW in the future, but what is the deal???

I have heard that there have been several buy backs with the early 745s, but not with the newer ones.
I talked with the SA at my BMW dealer and believes that the problems with the 745 are due to the advanced technology in the vehicles. When you develop a completely new platform with such new technology a manufacturer can never anticipate all the problems that will occur. I think BMW is having so many problems because they release these features a little to early, and not proving the reliablity.

The problems are not Just with the new models. BMW has had problems for years with the "technology" in their cars. I have owned two, a 3 series mid 80's that I had little trouble with and a 94 5 series that has been a constant problem. In theory an engine/transmission managment system is a great idea. In reality, it's a nightmare. Compound that with the fact that many of the certified bmw mechanics I've dealt with can't fix most of the problems that they see day to day and what you have is a major problem for BMW, and the owners of their cars.......Don't get me wrong, I'm crazy about my beemer. When it's running right it is a true beauty. But when something is wrong, it's a real beast.

This thread is very much like an article I read re: Mercedes Benz. As you know they are having so many technical/reliability problems that there ratings in all the major survey groups have plummeted. The senior executive being interviewed blamed the problem on Mercs advanced technology and went on to suggest that are re-thinking their position on being so cutting edge. Maybe BMW needs a similar strategy.

this is nothing new, when the E32 7 series came out they were plauged with all kinds of electronic gremlins.

lots of buyers have deserted the marque alltogather and will never return due to the constant problems.

when the early 750's came out they were compared to the space shuttle both because they had so many techno-systems and because they had to be in the shop for 5 hours for every hour in service

I love my 750 and have found it to be very reliable, but I also get a kick out of maintaining it myself and staying on top of everything.

but then again I love my land rover and they also have a reputation for a constant need for service.

BMW needs to replace their certified mechanics with engineers. Then maybe we can actually get our cars repaired when needed...........Example: recently my 5 series would not start. I went through the electricals and everything pointed to the fuel pump. I installed a new fuel pump and still no start. so I paid $60 to have my car hauled in to the local BMW dealer. 2 days and $400 later, all they did was change the spark plugs. They could'nt yell me why the car would'nt start, or if it would happen again. I got in the car last night and guess what........would'nt start............This morning it did?????

To reply to your question, No, I am afraid.

I had to change out the radiator, water pump, hoses, belts and now have traction control issues. The breaks are applied when I LEASE EXPECT IT TO. It'sfrustrating man. STILL I LOVE MY RIDE THOUGH.

Oh not to mention I cannot find the 98 manual, the big one I mean with detailed info on changing everything.

I have 123,000 with great success. A little front suspension replacements and a new radiator and two new Cam sensors. All acceptable for a car of this weight and performance
