'95-'99 Which year to buy?

I'm looking to buy a 740iL in the immediate future and have about a $25,000 budget. I'm new to BMW's so I have a few questions about what are the best years (and problems associated with certain years).

So I welcome input- If you were buying a used 740 what would you look out for or recommend?

Pay $20k and keep $5k for upkeep.
Get the newest you can afford. Expect to spend $1k-$1500 a year for upkeep. Buy 96+ only.

Check out Carmax.com. I bought my '99 740il mint with 3 year warranty for $10K less than local $tealers wanted for comparable car. My car is also CPO and had alot of work done before I purchased it. I know that Carmax currently has some BMW's for sale. Good luck-John.
