Automatic Steering Column Adjust 1996 740IL

Does anyone have information about why my steering column will no longer adjust. I have tried replacing the fuses, but the the column still will not adjust. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just do not know what other trouble shooting techniques I should try.

My dad's 740iL has never had this problem but I can tell you that you're probably fighting an uphill battle trying to figure it out yourself. Take it to your BMW dealership - there are just so many electronic minefields in the E38...

For a long time, I forgot the steering wheel would rise up when you turn off the car for easy access. And it would come down when you start the car. But mine was not doing that for a long time. Until something else failed, I think it's the seat control unit. I took the car to the local services and once they replaced the unit. It started moving up when I turned the car off again. Yeah, the car has a lot of minor issues here and there. But the engine and the tranny are troublefree so far. Also, the cupholder broke the second times so I decided not to replace it.
