What belt on motor can cost $3500 to fix

2 of my firends said that when their X5 s hit 100k some belt went and caused over $3500 worth of damage. They are technically illiterate and couldnt tell me what happened. I know there is a timing chain not a belt and am not sure when or if it has to be changed. Could it be a serpentine belt that went and caused the motor to overheat and warp the heads.. We asked the dealer and they said they didnt know what we were talking about.

Any help wouild be greatly appreciated as I am coming up on 85k miles,

Strange I would suspect the serpentine belt and they let the motor overheat. I would think if the timing chain broke it would cost more than $3500. to repair. If you have not replaced your belt do it now, it is due.
